“I’m really struggling with walking,” You think to yourself. “I wonder if I should see a doctor?”

If you’re struggling with pain when walking or are starting to notice that you’re experiencing difficulty while walking, then it’s time to explore the possibility of having scoliosis. To help you understand what scoliosis is, this article will provide you with some of the key information you should know about this condition. It will also help you figure out what you should do if you suspect that you have scoliosis.

Please note that the information we provide in this article shouldn’t be used in place of professional advice. Please see a chiropractor like those found at Elevate Wellness in order to know if scoliosis is the real issue behind the pain that you’re experiencing.

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is when the spine is curved. This curving on the spine happens before puberty occurs. Once the curvature occurs, it usually becomes an issue later on in life. The severe scoliosis ranges from mild to severe cases. Severe cases usually involve some type of surgery so that the spine can be made straighter. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, 2-3% of people in the United States have scoliosis. That’s about six to nine million Americans.

Scoliosis

Symptoms of Scoliosis

Signs of Scoliosis range from mild discomfort to extreme pain. Here are signs to keep an eye out for:

  • You experience difficulty walking. Scoliosis can make walking difficult because of issues due to posture. Lack of correct posture adds to difficulties with walking.
  • You’re experiencing fatigue.
  • You’re feeling a lot of pain and body aches
  • You’re struggling with loss of height. When you’re posture changes due to a curved spine, you experience a loss of height
  • Your clothes don’t fit well anymore.

These are just some of the issues associated with scoliosis. There are many other signs to keep an eye out for.

Treating Scoliosis in 2 Ways With A Chiropractor

With the help of a chiropractor, you can treat scoliosis. Here are 2 ways that a chiropractor can help you with this condition.

1. A chiropractor can help you with noninvasive methods

In severe cases of scoliosis, an individual is told that they will need to have a surgery where a pulley is placed in their back. This pulley helps straighten out your back. For individuals who don’t want this invasive method, a chiropractor can do a chiropractic adjustment. Chiropractic adjustments help with spinal misalignment (spinal misalignments are a sign of scoliosis). For mild cases of scoliosis where medication is seen as a solution to chronic pain, a chiropractor can try methods that have less side effects. That’s because medications have side effects. But with a chiropractor, you can try different exercises and even massage therapy to help you with your condition.

2. A chiropractor can help you learn techniques you can use on your own

A lot of times, learning techniques to manage scoliosis on your own can help you with this condition. That is, rather than waiting for medications or other methods to help you, a chiropractor can teach you techniques that you can use on your own. The techniques that your chiropractor teaches you will range from simple to complex exercises. Additionally, a chiropractor will go over lifestyle changes that can help you manage your condition.

You experience a sharp pain running through your legs. You ask yourself, “Why am I feeling this?” and “Where is this pain coming from?”

In this article, we’ll provide you with some information on sciatica, a potential cause of the pain that you’re feeling. If you’re experiencing pain in your feel, legs, butt and lower back, then this might be due to sciatic nerve pain. We’ll share some ways that a chiropractor can help with this pain.

Keep in mind that while this article provides tips on sciatica, you should go to a licensed and experienced professional for help with this issue. This article should not be used as a substitute for getting help.

Sciatic Nerve Pain (Sciatica) and Its Symptoms

Sciatic nerve pain or sciatica often results in pain in your feet, legs, lower back and bottom. To give you a little more information about how that happens, you have to understand the sciatic nerve in your body. The sciatic nerve is a major nerve that runs through your body. It has 5 different nerves connected to the overall nerve. These 5 nerves makeup the sciatic nerve.

Here are some symptoms of sciatic nerve pain to keep an eye out for:

  • Aches and pains in your lower body, especially in your legs and back.
  • Struggling with bodily functions. For example, missing the bathroom when you are experiencing the urgency to urinate. This can also include difficulty with managing bowel movements.
  • Numbness in your lower body.
  • Difficult with motor functioning (i.e., you have a hard time walking or moving around).

Traditional Ways of Treating Sciatic Nerve Pain

If you’re experiencing sciatica, you may need different interventions. For example, a first level intervention might be taking medication for your sciatic nerve pain. Other interventions may include no treatment at all. The reason that you might not get any treatment is because sciatica goes away after a few weeks. It’s important to note that it may also return after subsiding. Additionally, it can be very difficult to tolerate while you’re experiencing the pain.

Finally, the last resort might be getting surgery. A lot of people find this method to be invasive. Some people also do not feel comfortable with this method.

How A Chiropractor Can Help With Sciatica

If you’re experiencing sciatic nerve pain, a chiropractor is one way of experimenting with alternative and holistic medicine. For example, a chiropractor will use alternative therapies to help you manage your sciatica.

Experience Less Side Effects and Risks With A Chiropractor

Getting surgery comes with its own risks. It’s also threatening. If you’re thinking of sciatica and how it may go away on its own, getting a surgery also seems unnecessary. Additionally, while taking medications is associated with less risks, medications do have side effects. Some side effects include feeling tired and sleepy. If you’re taking medications like antidepressants which are supposed to help with sciatica, you may also experience weight loss or gain and change in appetite.

But with a chiropractor, you can get the benefits of medicine without having to manage the side effects. For example, your chiropractor may try things like massages and exercises that relieve sciatic nerve pain. What these alternative therapies do is relieve the pain while lowering the costs  associated with relieving the pain.

You shouldn’t have to live with the pain of sciatica. You also shouldn’t have to deal with the side effects and risks associated with traditional treatments of this type of pain.

Herniated discs can be incredibly uncomfortable and can even lead to substantial permanent damage. When you experience a herniated disc, it will be important to work with an expert to restore the problem. At Elevate Wellness Chiropractic, our experts are dedicated to providing the services that are necessary in restoring the health of your spine. Here are a few important things that you should know about herniated discs.

Discs

What are Herniated Discs?

There are discs all throughout your spine. They range from your neck all the way down through your spine, though herniated discs are more common in the lower back. These discs serve to cushion the bones in the spine in order to prevent damage. This helps protect the spine by absorbing shocks that regularly occur to your spine from daily activities, such as walking or running.

The 2 Components of a Disc

Each disc in your spine consists of two parts, an inner part and an outer part. The inner portion is soft and gelatinous, serving to absorb shock. Then the disc has a tough outer ring to help protect this inner portion.

What are Herniated Discs?

Herniated discs occur when the inner part of the disc is able to protrude through the outer portion, leaving it vulnerable. This may be caused by injury or weakness. A herniated disc tends to result in a substantial amount of pain and discomfort.

Symptoms of Herniated Discs

There are several symptoms of herniated discs that you should be aware of. If you notice these symptoms, you will need to ensure that you receive the appropriate treatment to restore your health. Herniated discs often result in pain and numbness, often on a single side of the body. They may also cause pain that will worsen at night or while you are walking or standing. Herniated discs can cause muscles to weaken inexplicably. They also often result in sensations of tingling, burning, or aching in the affected area.

Common Causes

There are several common causes of herniated discs. Understanding these causes may help you to identify a herniated disc when you experience. Age often enables the outer layer to weaken, which allows the inner portion to protrude through. Certain movements and improper lifting strategies may also cause a herniated disc. Excess weight is another factor that contributes to herniated discs, because the extra weight will place more strain on your spine.

Treatment

The appropriate treatment will depend on your exact situation. Herniated discs can cause permanent nerve damage, so it is important to ensure you have them treated properly. In some cases, a herniated disc can be resolved with effective exercise to strengthen the area, as well as a physical therapy regimen. In more severe cases, surgery may be necessary to fix the herniated disc.
